Mango Varieties & IdentificationIs Pope a general name for Hawaiian seedling mangoes?
No. The Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station identifies Pope as a particular named cultivar originating as an Irwin seedling. Other Hawaiian selections have different recorded origins. Use Pope only for material connected with that cultivar rather than as a geographic category. An unlabeled seedling growing in Hawaii needs its own provisional identity until its provenance can be established.
