Locate the union and trace the intended variety into the retained framework before agreeing to a major cut. Growth below that union belongs to the rootstock, so a reduction that removes all scion wood may leave a different tree rebuilding the canopy. Include the union in the work photograph and discuss any uncertainty with the grafter or nursery. This is especially useful on old trees whose graft is hard to recognize.
