Identify the swollen branch collar and the bark ridge at the attachment before cutting. Preserve that protective tissue by finishing outside it rather than sawing flush against the trunk. A smooth-looking flush cut can create a larger injury. If the attachment is unclear or the limb is heavy, have a qualified arborist locate and execute the cut.
