A projecting stub prevents new tissue at the branch base from closing efficiently around the removal site. Finish at the appropriate attachment without cutting into the collar or leaving unnecessary branch length. This differs from temporarily shortening a live branch for training. Ask for professional assessment where old decay or an unusual fork obscures the correct final-cut position.
