A reduction cut transfers the end of a branch to an existing lateral. The retained lateral needs enough size and vigor to take that role; choosing a tiny twig merely to reach a desired outline can leave an unsuitable reduction. Have major cuts selected around the actual framework. The target canopy boundary should guide the plan without overriding branch anatomy.
