Digging tools or a tree spade can leave compacted, slick sides that restrict movement into the surrounding soil. Roughen those surfaces before positioning the root ball, while keeping its supporting base firm and correctly placed. Work only when soil conditions permit sound preparation. This improves the planting interface; it does not remedy a site with a high water table or an impermeable layer beyond the hole.
