Surface closure and internal wood condition are different observations. New growth can cover a wound while decay remains within older tissue. Record the history and have substantial injuries assessed when they affect major load-bearing parts. Do not assume that a smooth exterior restores the original strength, and avoid reopening the wound yourself in an attempt to inspect deeper wood.
