A bulky stake can physically deflect developing branches and produce a flat-sided or misshapen crown. Inspect the space around the leader as well as the tie's tightness. Select a support arrangement that permits intended branch development and review it as shoots extend. A straight supported trunk is not sufficient evidence that the canopy is developing normally around the hardware.
