A visibly dirty surface is difficult to sanitize effectively because soil and plant debris can shelter contamination. Clean the bench first, then use an appropriate sanitation procedure for the material and intended setting. Follow product directions without improvising mixtures. The sequence matters: applying a sanitizer over accumulated potting medium does not demonstrate that the working surface is ready for clean plants.
