Tell the laboratory what material you intend to test and follow its preparation instructions. Loose surface litter and mulch are different materials from the mineral soil beneath them; including a changing amount can make comparisons misleading. Record the sampling surface and depth so later collections represent the same layer. If the question concerns the mulch's nutrient contribution, request an appropriate separate analysis rather than assuming a soil method answers it.
