A reading taken during wetting answers a different question from one taken after water has moved through the soil or after several days of drying. Record the elapsed time along with depth and position relative to outlets. Compare similar points in successive irrigation cycles when evaluating a schedule. Otherwise, a change caused by measurement timing can be mistaken for an improvement in soil storage or a sudden increase in tree water use.
