Color can reflect organic matter, moisture, minerals, and other influences. It is useful descriptive information but not a quantitative carbon test. Have suitable laboratory measurements made when carbon content matters, and avoid assigning an organic-matter percentage from a photograph or comparing a wet sample with a dry one solely by darkness.
