Only the living material actually retained in its branches is available as scionwood. The rootstock is a separate component, and a canopy collection does not automatically preserve a usable shoot of that rootstock. Make a component map before deciding which accessions are backed up. A list of cultivar names on the trunk can overstate what can actually be recovered for future propagation.
