Record both unions and the plant material between them. The lowest union identifies the original stock and canopy combination; the newer union identifies the replacement scion on that existing framework. Photograph their positions before new growth obscures them. This history helps interpret later shoots and symptoms, and prevents a future owner from assuming that everything above the lowest visible union belongs to one cultivar.
