A longer stick can be harder to keep motionless, especially when it catches wind or develops leaves above a small union. Additional buds do not compensate for unstable contact. Choose material that fits the graft method and available support, and consider how the first growth will be protected. Evaluate usable scion structure rather than treating maximum length as the best use of valuable donor wood.
