Flowering & PollinationCan mango pollen germinate well but produce poorly extending pollen tubes?
Yes. Germination frequency and pollen-tube extension are separate measurements, and temperature experiments in mango have evaluated both. A grain beginning to germinate does not establish that its tube will grow adequately toward fertilization. When reviewing a laboratory report, ask which endpoint was measured and under what conditions. Avoid ranking pollen samples solely by germination percentage when tube performance is the suspected limitation.
