Stains detect particular structural or biochemical properties, which need not match successful germination. Studies of pollen-testing methods, including work with mango, have found that some staining results overestimate functional performance. Ask which assay was used before comparing viability percentages. For a storage or temperature experiment, validate the chosen indicator against an appropriate germination test rather than treating all viability methods as interchangeable.
