Their architectural positions can be associated with different branching and reproductive behavior. Research has therefore distinguished apical from lateral growth units rather than assuming all terminal units are equivalent. Record their origin when comparing a treatment or following canopy development. Pooling unequal proportions of the two types can create an apparent flowering difference that partly reflects which positions were sampled.
