A treatment can alter whether or when a bud starts growing without determining that the resulting shoot is reproductive. Mango experiments have examined dormancy release and floral initiation separately to avoid confusing these responses. Record budbreak timing and the eventual shoot type as different outcomes. More rapidly activated buds do not necessarily indicate a stronger flowering treatment when the new growth is vegetative.
