Washing adds a known volume of water and extracts sugars with a method-dependent recovery, so the resulting solution is not undiluted nectar. Record the extraction procedure and calculate the intended sugar quantity using appropriate blanks and recovery information. Do not compare its raw refractometer reading with a direct nectar droplet as though both represented the concentration encountered by a visiting insect.
