Microsporogenesis is the stage in which pollen mother cells undergo meiosis to produce microspores. It precedes the later development of the male gametophyte. Distinguishing the stages helps interpret damage before flowers open; counting visibly open flowers cannot establish whether the earlier cellular process produced normal pollen in those buds.
