A ruptured grain is not equivalent to a normally emerging and extending pollen tube. Distinguish bursting from germination when scoring culture preparations, and examine whether medium conditions or handling contributed. A visible protrusion or released contents alone should not be used to claim that the sample can support normal reproductive growth.
