Fruit Development, Ripening & HarvestDoes a mango draw all of its growth resources from the leaves immediately beside it?
Developing fruit use current photosynthesis and stored reserves, and an intact branch is not necessarily an isolated supply unit. Research using girdled shoots demonstrates why counting nearby leaves alone can misrepresent the resources supporting a fruit. Preserve healthy foliage and assess the wider tree before interpreting a sparsely leafed fruiting shoot. An experimental leaf count should not become a universal instruction for removing fruit or leaves.
