Fruit dimensions reflect reversible water-related swelling as well as lasting growth. Mango modeling and field measurements have distinguished daytime shrinkage from nighttime expansion. Measure tagged fruit at a consistent time and follow the trend over successive days before declaring a growth failure. A single smaller afternoon reading is not enough to identify permanent loss of growth or justify an abrupt change in irrigation.
