Mango FAQ

1 FAQ

Fruit Development, Ripening & HarvestDoes a harvested mango's weight loss measure only the water it has lost?

Water loss is important, but respiration also consumes stored material and exchanges gases with the surroundings. A change in whole-fruit weight is therefore not a direct, isolated measurement of transpiration or sugar consumption. Use the appropriate method for the process being studied. Record surface water and handling consistently as well, because a wet initial weighing can create another misleading contribution to apparent storage loss.
