Pests, Diseases & DisordersHow can I tell trunk gum from honeydew dripping onto mango bark?
Trace the deposit to its origin. Gum emerges from a point in the bark or a wound, whereas honeydew may arrive from sap-feeding colonies on foliage above and coat otherwise intact surfaces. Check the canopy directly overhead and photograph the bark before wiping anything away. Both processes can occur on one tree. Finding insects above a sticky trunk therefore does not explain a separate area where bark itself is visibly exuding sap.
