Recovering the scab organism in culture is more successful from lesions on young material than from old scars. Ask the laboratory which fresh growth to submit and collect it before the available examples become fully weathered. Include photographs of older symptoms to preserve context. A failed isolation from an old scab should not automatically overturn a diagnosis without considering the condition of the sample.
