Black spot bacteria may occur in planting material before obvious symptoms develop. A visual inspection is useful but cannot establish freedom from this disease. Use traceable nursery material and ask about the source block's disease history and applicable health checks. Keep incoming lots identifiable through establishment, because a delayed symptom does not mean infection necessarily began after planting at the new site.
