Armored scales have a separate protective cover, while the surface of a soft scale forms part of its body. Soft scales commonly produce honeydew; armored scales do not. Use magnification and request identification before selecting a management approach. A dry, nonsticky infestation can still involve damaging scale, so absence of sooty mold should not end the inspection.
