Pests, Diseases & DisordersWhat is a hyperparasitoid, and why does it complicate mango natural-enemy observations?
A hyperparasitoid develops at the expense of another parasitoid rather than directly providing the same control of the plant-feeding pest. Consequently, not every small wasp emerging from pest-associated material has the same ecological role. Preserve identification information when evaluating biological control. Wasp activity alone cannot reveal whether the pest's primary parasitoids are increasing successfully or being attacked by another trophic level.
