Emissivity describes how a surface emits thermal radiation relative to a reference emitter. Incorrect assumptions can distort an infrared reading, especially when comparing foliage with shiny metal or reflective coverings. Use an appropriate setting and measurement method for the target. A difference between two displayed temperatures may partly reflect surface properties rather than an equivalent difference in their actual temperatures.
