Parent selection concerns the traits needed in offspring, which can include architecture, disease response, or other complementary characteristics. A parent does not have to satisfy the entire commercial release brief by itself. Document the specific contribution being sought and evaluate the resulting seedlings. An attractive rationale for a cross remains a hypothesis until useful offspring are observed.
