Mango FAQ

1 FAQ

Seeds, Rootstocks & BreedingDoes polyembryonic mean that a mango has extra sets of chromosomes?

No. Polyembryony describes multiple embryos within a seed; ploidy describes chromosome sets within cells. They are different biological characteristics. Mango genetics research treats embryo type separately from chromosome information. Counted sprouts therefore cannot establish a plant's ploidy, and a chromosome count cannot identify which sibling from a polyembryonic stone is maternal or sexually produced.
