It may contain an aborted embryo rather than a functional seed. Mango experiments distinguish these small fruits from normally seeded fruit and relate some cases to conditions during early development. Inspect the stone and embryo status before counting it as recovered breeding seed. Fruit retention alone is not equivalent to obtaining a plant capable of entering the next evaluation stage.
