Prune (generated editorial illustration)

Prune

To prune is to remove selected shoots, branches, or other plant parts to improve structure, access, health, or canopy size. Mango pruning often follows harvest so new shoots can develop and mature before the next flowering period, although climate, cultivar timing, and damaged wood can change the decision. Unlike a deciduous tree, mango should not automatically be pruned according to a winter-dormancy rule. Use deliberate cuts and avoid severe, repeated topping that removes productive canopy.

Flushing

Flushing

Flushing is the production of a new burst of shoots and leaves, rather than steady growth throughout the year. Mango leaves often emerge bronze, reddish, or pale green and become firmer and darker as they mature. A flush helps build the canopy and provides shoots that may later flower, but a late vegetative flush can compete with flowering. Record when growth starts and hardens before deciding when to prune or fertilize; the calendar varies with climate and tree condition.
