Quarantine

Plant quarantine comprises measures intended to prevent introduction or spread of regulated pests. Mango fruit, seed, scions, or trees may face different movement conditions depending on origin, destination, and pest status. A small personal parcel or a trade between friends is not automatically exempt. Consult the relevant plant-health authority before moving material and keep required records. This glossary definition explains the concept rather than providing current legal permission to transport mangoes across a particular border.

Fruit Fly

Fruit fly is a common name used for different flies, including species whose larvae can infest mango fruit and small vinegar flies attracted to damaged or fermenting material. The distinction matters for crop protection and quarantine. Adult appearance, larval findings, host condition, and location help guide identification. Keep fallen fruit managed and follow local reporting requirements for suspect regulated pests. A household vinegar trap or the sight of flies near overripe fruit does not establish control of a regulated mango fruit-fly species.

Hot Water Treatment

Hot water treatment is a controlled postharvest process in which mangoes are exposed to a specified water temperature for a specified time. Commercial protocols may target insect quarantine requirements or decay management, and the schedules are not interchangeable. Fruit size, maturity, equipment control, and the approved protocol affect safety and quality. Excess heat can scald fruit or disrupt ripening. It is not a general instruction to soak homegrown mangoes in hot water or a substitute for required phytosanitary certification.

Hydro-Cooling

Hydro-cooling is removing field heat from produce with suitably controlled cool water. With mangoes, water sanitation, fruit condition, exposure time, and temperature are important because contaminated water can spread decay and excessively cold treatment can injure sensitive fruit. It is not the same as a hot-water quarantine treatment and does not replace one. A commercial cooling process needs validation for the crop and handling system; plunging every freshly picked mango into ice water is not a generally safe quality recommendation.

SWD

SWD stands for spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, a small vinegar fly best known as a pest of certain thin-skinned fruits. It should not be used as a catch-all name for every fly around ripe mangoes. Other drosophilid flies often gather at damaged or fermenting fruit, while different fruit-fly groups can be regulated mango pests. Identification and local host information matter before choosing traps, interpreting fruit damage, or making a quarantine or pesticide decision.
