Glossary

Electrical Conductivity

Electrical conductivity, commonly abbreviated EC, measures how readily a solution conducts electricity and is used as an indicator of dissolved salts. In mango growing it can help assess irrigation water, soil extracts, or container media. The sampling and extraction method matter, so readings from different methods are not automatically comparable. EC does not identify which salts are present or measure pH. Investigate high readings alongside water quality, fertilizer use, drainage, and symptoms instead of adding more fertilizer to every pale tree.

Epicotyl Grafting

Epicotyl grafting uses the young stem above the seed leaves of a newly germinated seedling as the grafting stock. It is also called stone grafting in mango nursery practice. The tender stock and attached seed reserves make handling and timing important, and performance depends on local growing conditions and suitable scion material. It is a nursery propagation technique, not a reason to graft onto a damaged sprout or assume every seedling is immediately ready for the procedure.

Ethnobotany

Ethnobotany is the study of relationships between people and plants, including uses, names, knowledge, and cultural practices. For mangoes, it can examine food traditions, planting customs, trade, and the preservation of locally valued selections. A record of traditional use is evidence of a cultural practice, not automatically proof of medical effectiveness or safety. Keeping that distinction clear allows historical and community knowledge to be discussed respectfully without inventing treatment claims or unsupported stories about cultivar origins.

Ethylene Gas

Ethylene gas is a naturally produced plant hormone involved in fruit ripening and other growth responses. Mature mangoes produce ethylene as they ripen, and exposure can help coordinate ripening in controlled commercial systems. It cannot replace the developmental changes needed before harvest, so immature fruit may still taste poor. At home, a paper bag can retain naturally produced ethylene, but the fruit needs ventilation and regular checking. Do not use unapproved chemicals or improvised gas systems to force ripening.

Evapotranspiration

Evapotranspiration is the combined loss of water through evaporation from surfaces and transpiration from plants. Temperature, sunlight, humidity, wind, and canopy size influence it. For mango irrigation, an estimate can help explain why water demand changes between cool, cloudy periods and hot, windy weather. It is not the same as a fixed watering interval or a direct measurement of one tree's need. Combine weather information with actual root-zone moisture and the tree's developmental stage.
